Brookings Institution — Research on Marijuana Policy Change

Organization:
Brookings Institution
Award Date:
03/2014
Amount:
$212,500
Purpose:
To support research on the implementation and effects of marijuana legalization in Washington and Colorado, including international ramifications.

Good Ventures awarded a grant of $212,500 in March 2014 to the Brookings Institution, in partnership with the Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA), to support research on the implementation and effects of marijuana legalization in Washington and Colorado, including international and treaty ramifications of legalization experiments in the US. The grant is part of our exploration of drug policy reform, an area we've prioritized for deeper investigation through learning grants. The project was recommended to us by Graham Boyd, who previously worked as an advisor to the late philanthropist Peter Lewis. (Mr. Lewis had contributed to a previous round of research on marijuana policy change by Brookings and WOLA.) The grant represents half of the amount Brookings and WOLA are seeking to raise for papers and events proposed for 2014, which are described in Section II of the attached proposal.
