Dalhousie University — Colostrum Research

Organization:
Dalhousie University
Award Date:
10/2024
Amount:
$5,307,885
Purpose:
To investigate the composition of human colostrum and to investigate which components of colostrum impart strongly beneficial effects on survival of neonates imperiled by factors such as premature birth and sepsis.

Open Philanthropy recommended a grant of $2,306,098 over five years to the University of Manitoba to support research on human colostrum’s ability to reduce the incidence of neonatal sepsis.

Colostrum is produced in the mammary glands early in lactation, prior to mature milk production. This grant will support an analysis of colostrum components to identify the mechanism by which it protects newborns from infection. This is one of two grants we are making to support this work.

This falls within Open Philanthropy’s focus area of scientific research.
