Good Ventures awarded a grant of $265,000 to the Kaiser Permanente Center for Health Research to support research by Dr. Sheila Weinmann and colleagues on the impact of herpes infections and antiviral drugs on the incidence of Alzheimer’s disease. This research will analyze existing data to evaluate whether administering an anti-herpetic drug to patients infected with Herpes Simplex Virus is associated with reduced risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Weinmann’s findings may have important implications for Alzheimer’s prevention.

Good Ventures, with support from Open Philanthropy, has been investigating how best to fund scientific research that might help reduce the future burden of Alzheimer's disease.
