Organization:
Rutgers University
Award Date:
11/2023
Amount:
$150,416
Purpose:
To support research on safeguards to promote ethical design of potential future tuberculosis (TB) phase III vaccine trials among Brazilian incarcerated persons.

Open Philanthropy recommended a gift of $150,416 over two years to Rutgers University to support research led by Mônica Magalhães and Nir Eyal on safeguards to promote ethical design of potential future tuberculosis (TB) phase III vaccine trials among Brazilian incarcerated persons.

There is no TB vaccine that is effective in adults, and in Brazil, rates of tuberculosis are more than 30 times higher among incarcerated persons than among the general population. This is one of three grants Open Philanthropy is making to support work in this area.

This falls within Open Philanthropy’s focus area of scientific research, specifically within its interest in advancing human health and wellbeing.
