- Good Ventures awarded a grant of $5,000,000 to Startup:Education in April 2014 to support school reform in Newark.
In September 2010, Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan gave $100 million to support school reform in Newark. The gift was structured as a "match" where contributions from other donors would "unlock" the funding on a one-to-one basis. At the time, Good Ventures co-founders Dustin Moskovitz and Cari Tuna expressed an interest in participating because they think highly of the people involved and were compelled by the opportunity to help meet a pressing need in Newark and support more learning about what works in education reform. A few months after starting Good Ventures in 2011, Ms. Tuna traveled to Newark to visit schools with Cory Booker and meet with the leaders of Newark Public Schools and the Foundation for Newark’s Future. Good Ventures chose to contribute $5 million to the school reform effort, which represents 2.5% of the total funding goal. We finalized the grant in April 2014 and prepared a write-up on the school reform effort with help from GiveWell staff.
