Organization:
Universitätsklinikum Hamburg-Eppendorf
Award Date:
12/2021
Amount:
$1,307,513
Purpose:
To support research on Alzheimer’s disease.

Good Ventures awarded a grant of $1,307,513 over four and a half years to the Universitätsklinikum Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) to support research on Alzheimer’s disease, led by Diego Sepulveda-Falla of UKE, Joseph Arboleda-Velásquez of Mass Eye and Ear, Laura Kiessling and Ed Boyden of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Francisco Lopera of the Universidad de Antioquia.

Researchers will use a new method of molecular visualization, developed by Dr. Boyden, to analyze brain structures in Alzheimer’s patients in order to investigate the mechanisms associated with resilience to Alzheimer's disease. The research builds upon Dr. Arboleda-Velásquez’s work, which we supported in August 2020, identifying genes that delay the onset of the disease in humans.

Good Ventures, with support from Open Philanthropy, has been investigating how best to fund scientific research that might help reduce the future burden of Alzheimer’s disease.
